23.23. Cloud Split at Train Crossing
Location: Local Track Crossing, East Nagasaki Spur
Description:
The crossing bell malfunctions—ringing steadily with no train in sight. Above, a long cloud splits directly down its axis, forming a mirrored tunnel in the sky. No one else is around. Juna notes the angle: 77 degrees northeast. Judai records audio—nothing but a ticking, like a film reel on standby. The air smells faintly of ozone and salt. A second shadow, shaped like a railcar, passes silently overhead. They check the map: this intersection does not exist. On the far side, the street names are reversed—every letter mirrored. “Did we cross or not?” Judai asks. Juna doesn’t answer. She photographs her own shadow. It’s gone.
Keywords:
sky split, mirrored railcar, non-existent crossing, inverted street names, vanished shadow
Very Short Story:
They stepped back, then forward again. The bell still rang, unchanging. Judai reached for Juna’s hand. “Don’t look up again,” she whispered. But he already had. Inside the cloud, he thought he saw himself. Not mirrored—delayed. “We crossed when we weren’t supposed to,” she said. “That’s why the shadow’s missing.” A train passed below the sky. No one heard it but them.
