2.4. The Shipwreck Invasion

(Location: Projection Chamber B, Maritime Archive of Tokyo)

Description:
Projected on the wall is footage of a shipwreck — dated 1904, location listed as “Manchurian Sea.” But the ship is modern. Its flags change every few seconds. Judai and Juna lean forward to study the crew. Their faces blur and reform — known actors from past decades, none of whom were ever in the same film. “This is an invasion through cinema,” Juna whispers. A storm roars in the footage, then freezes mid-wave. The reel skips ahead: the ship is in a desert. Skips again: it hovers above Tokyo. “Not an arrival,” Judai says. “A replacement.” The film is an interloper, crashing into their time track, shipwrecked across memory. The projector smokes, but does not stop.

Very Short Story:
They watched the reel flicker. Salt air filled the room. But the sea vanished — replaced by sand, then neon, then blackout. “That ship was never real,” Juna said. “Or it’s more real than we are.” Judai reached toward the frame, and his fingers grew wet. The film did not stop. It stuttered. It drifted. The ship sailed again — this time across the skyline of 1980s Tokyo.
