2.5. Israel in Manchuria
(Location: Redacted District, Manchu Edison Archive Annex)
Description:
Behind a red curtain in the Manchu Edison Archive is a film labeled *ISRAEL IN MANCHURIA (UNDATED CUT)*. No runtime. No script. Judai threads it through a dusty projector. Juna opens her book to a blank page. The film begins: a snow-covered village, Hebrew signs on buildings that flicker between eras. Figures appear — part ghetto, part laboratory, part stage. They speak in subtitles only visible at certain angles. “It’s a sanctuary built from memory,” Juna says. Judai nods. “But whose?” The reel contains no audio. Just breath, footsteps, and the low hum of a broadcast not meant for anyone present. As the film progresses, so does winter. The final frame shows a menorah made of camera tripods — burning without light.

Very Short Story:
The screen turned blue, then white, then blue again. Juna squinted and read the lines between scenes. “This isn’t a movie,” she whispered. “It’s a coded invitation.” They listened closely. Somewhere, a voice tried to say “return.” But it always cut off at “re—.” They let the reel finish. They did not rewind. The projectionist booth behind them was empty — and so was the chair they’d both seen occupied moments before.
