13.14. -** ***The Bell of the Wrong Season

Location: Temple Ruins, Kyoto Atmospheric Grid A4
Description:
The bell was never supposed to ring in summer. Its tone was calibrated to winter air: dense, reflective, slow to scatter. But it rang anyway—four times at noon—each note echoing through empty air with a distorted lilt, like ice cracking underwater. Juna tracked the source to a collapsed tower held together by copper vines. Judai located the remains of a tuning device half-buried near the altar. The inscription read: *When this bell rings off-season, prepare to unfreeze the present.* Beneath the bell’s base, moss covered a map of constellations long erased by city light. The bell was no longer functional—it was anticipatory. Its wrongness meant something had changed. Or would.

Very Short Story:
Juna reached up, touched the bell—it was cold. Not metal, but colder than metal. Judai held his breath. “Do you hear the delay?” he asked. The fourth toll arrived thirty seconds after the third. “Time’s skipping,” Juna whispered. They backed away. Behind them, a dog barked. Then the same bark repeated seconds later—unreal and echoing. “We’re living ahead of sound,” said Judai. They left quickly, not looking back. The fifth toll never came. But the air felt like waiting.
