13.13. -** ***The Solstice Screen Without Light
Location: Shinto Botanical Projection Garden, Inner Kyoto Ring
Description:
A rectangular stone slab stands in the garden clearing, surrounded by infrared-sensitive trees that bloom only when no light touches them. This is the Solstice Screen. Not a screen in the cinematic sense, but a negative space that erases what is placed before it. Juna and Judai brought no camera, only a blank slide. When held before the screen, the slide began to darken—gradually recording not what was seen, but what had been forgotten. “It’s a memorial for misremembering,” said Juna. Faint symbols appear on the slab's surface once a year, always different. This year, it showed a bell tower surrounded by sleeping deer. Judai had never seen it. Juna had dreamed it once. Neither said anything.

Very Short Story:
They waited past midnight. The flowers bloomed faintly blue. Juna knelt, eyes closed. She whispered a name she didn’t know she knew. Judai touched the slab—it felt warm, like paper under a candle. The slide turned black, then red, then clear again. “Did we lose something?” he asked. “Or find what left us?” The slab dimmed further. In the distance, a deer barked once, then silence. Juna picked up the slide and placed it in her book, though it contained no image. “It’s not for seeing,” she said. “It’s for no longer needing to.”
