9.4. Emperor’s Code, Frog’s Memory
(Location: Nobiyama Signal Archive Chamber)
Description:
Deep beneath the dish, an archive filled with devices glowed faint green. Screens with oval frames, vacuum tubes resembling frog throats, and antenna arrays coiled like legs before a leap. Juna opened a drawer labeled “Taisho-9.” Inside: schematics for “biological receivers,” shaped like frogs, designed to store time-based signals. “He didn’t just broadcast to people,” she whispered. “He encoded himself into them.” Judai flipped through broadcast logs, finding strange entries—dates that never existed, messages in croak-phonetics. One entry simply read: “I. 9. They are the loyal frogs.” A projection system flickered on by itself, showing a loop of a frog jumping over a screen. Over and over. Each loop slower. “It’s deteriorating,” Judai said. “No,” said Juna. “It’s remembering.”

Very Short Story:
Juna watched the loop slow until it became a still. Then, without warning, the frog in the film turned to the camera and winked. Judai dropped the logbook. The entry he had just read was gone. In its place: “Confirmed. 9 Loyal.” The projector clicked off. One of the frog-shaped devices vibrated gently. It was receiving something—something not in the room. A low voice croaked from the speaker: “Repeat the transmission.”
