8.9. Transit Through the Railway of Smoke
(Location: Overpass Remnant, Kichijoji Side)
Description:
They waited at the end of a half-finished overpass, where the tracks once bent midair. A train of smoke emerged—no wheels, no steel, only memory held together by routine. Juna watched it pause mid-transition, almost dissolving. Its cars were filled with images: a burned ledger, a tea service, a school field trip that never happened. Judai reached into the vapor and pulled back a ticket stub dated 1953, punched but unused. “This line runs through forgetting,” he said. The conductor bowed, bodyless. No sound came from the horn, only a faint sigh of intention. They didn’t board. But they watched it leave, growing more solid as it faded. “It becomes real once it’s gone,” Juna whispered.

Very Short Story:
As the train passed, Judai saw himself through the window—much younger, laughing, holding a plastic dragonfly. Juna stepped closer and saw nothing in her car. “I wasn’t there,” she said. “Or maybe I haven’t yet arrived.” The train reversed slightly, then advanced. A shadow near the back car waved. It could have been anyone. Could have been everyone. When the smoke cleared, the stub in Judai’s hand now had writing: *Please wait where you already are.* They stayed until the sky turned brass, and even the wind forgot how to move.
