8.12. The Forgotten Conductor’s Mask
(Location: Storage Locker 09-A, Kanda Station Sub-Level)
Description:
In the bowels of Kanda Station, past all public access, they found the locker. No key was required—just intention. Inside, a mask lay curled in linen. It looked like a standard conductor’s covering from the 1940s, but with too many eyeholes. Judai lifted it and heard a timbre shift in the air. “It’s echoing us,” he said. Juna slipped the mask on briefly—and gasped. “I saw the routes, not as maps, but as decisions.” The locker trembled. A gust of subway wind lifted a page from Judai’s notebook and plastered it against the ceiling: a diagram of a train with no beginning. They left the mask where it was. But later, neither could draw their own faces properly.

Very Short Story:
The moment Juna wore the mask, the walls became diagrams. Each tile pulsed with the memory of a timetable. She heard not announcements, but inner debates—stations unsure of their own relevance. Judai reached to help remove the mask but found his hands reversed. Time had altered its own order in the confined space. “I can’t see your face,” he said. “I don’t have one here,” she replied. When she finally pulled it off, her eyes reflected maps not yet printed. They exited without speaking. Later, Judai found a photo from years ago—one he didn’t remember taking. In the background, a figure in a conductor’s mask walked behind them.
