7.23. Betty’s Reflection in a Black Mirror Drain
(Location: Corridor E12 Drain Cluster, JOAC Underside)
Description:
Drain Cluster E12 wasn’t mapped. But they found it—four grates arranged in a perfect square, each reflecting a different sky. Juna leaned over one and saw herself wearing a crown. Another showed Betty, hovering over a field of satellites. The third: a swarm of dragonflies, shaped like kanji. The fourth was empty. Judai lowered a probe with a mirror at the end. It returned scorched. “Heat signature of regret,” he said. The reflections weren’t visual. They were conditional—if you approached from the east, you saw your past. From the west, your alternative. Juna stood at center and whispered: “All drains lead to her.” A soft gurgle replied—not plumbing, but playback.

Very Short Story:
Juna sat at the center of the square. Judai adjusted a prism near the nearest grate. Reflections realigned—this time showing a version of her as a JOAC director. “This place doesn’t record futures,” she said. “It projects misremembrance.” One drain burbled, releasing a paper boat marked *Boop ’49.* She picked it up. It dissolved on contact. Judai wrote one word in his notebook: *She.* No further elaboration needed.
