4.22. Inside the Imperial Diet Library
(Location: National Memory Vault, West Reading Wing)
Description:
The reading room is temperature-controlled, history-controlled. Shelves are arranged in concentric circles. At the center, a chrysanthemum-shaped table holds books with no spines—only blank covers stamped with classification numbers that do not exist. Judai opens one labeled *Event: Not To Be Cited.* It contains equations of grief. Juna lifts a volume titled *Potential Wars of Future Pasts,* in which battles play out between theoretical regimes. A librarian hands them a scroll and says, “This is only readable if you’ve forgotten how to read.” The floor is glass. Beneath, black-and-white reels loop footage of events denied in the text above. “We’re standing on the part they kept moving,” Juna murmurs. Here, denial and memory perform a duet, scored in bureaucratic silence.

Very Short Story:
Judai couldn’t find the book he wanted, only the book that wanted him. It flapped open as he passed, pages snapping like gunshots. Juna traced a redacted timeline with her finger until it bled. The librarian watched, expressionless. “Every story in this wing was approved, retracted, and then archived as truth.” The projector below them showed a mushroom cloud collapsing inward. No blast. Just vanishing. They left with empty hands but minds overloaded. As they stepped outside, the door whispered: *You have checked out silence.*
