3.6. Nation of the Second Draft
(Location: Civic Editing Room, Provisional Constitution Office)
Description:
Inside a narrow room filled with red pencils and overhead projectors, Judai and Juna discover blueprints for a country that never made it past revision. The preamble reads: “We hold these truths until reworded.” Borders have annotations: “Move line for aesthetic balance.” A map hangs crookedly, showing oceans made of footnotes. Juna finds a draft of a national anthem — every third word crossed out. “This is how they tried to fix a country by editing its style,” she murmurs. Judai notes that even the term “citizen” is marked as “pending.” Each drawer contains versions of a founding moment, none the same, none signed. A shredder in the corner purrs softly, fed a page every hour. One labeled: “Declaration, take 17.”

Very Short Story:
Judai lifted a folder marked “Draft 12c.” Inside, he found a preamble that began: *We believe something, but we’re not sure what.* Juna unfolded a diagram of a government based on improvisation, with a parliament that met only when everyone had different opinions. “They edited themselves out of existence,” she muttered, watching the shredded remains of a tax code feed into the recycler. Judai attempted to resubmit a name on one of the documents, but the form rewrote itself in red ink: *Try again with fewer convictions.* They left through a door labeled “Maybe.” Outside, the sky had a watermark. They realized the country existed only when rewritten. And yet, something about it felt more honest than all the rest.
