3.24. The Empty Census

(Location: Demographic Theater, District Abandoned 12)

Description:
An open-air amphitheater holds rows of chairs labeled with names that don’t correspond to people anymore—if they ever did. Judai and Juna walk through as a loudspeaker lists categories in slow cadence: *Occupation: Dust Curator. Age: Unwilling.* The census was meant to finalize the nation’s self-definition. Instead, it documented the uncountable. Juna finds a stack of forms filled out by wind patterns. “The categories multiplied until they outnumbered the citizens,” she notes. Judai finds his name—misspelled, mismatched, misdated. “They took attendance,” he murmurs, “but the country had already left.” A final roll call echoes off empty seating: *Present?* Silence follows. Then, softly: *Uncounted.* They leave through the exit gate marked *Extrapolated Only.*

Keywords:
##population absence
##incomplete enumeration
##demographic hallucination
##statistical phantom
##census as theater

Very Short Story:
They filled out their census cards in pencil, hesitating on every answer. “Are you a resident?” Judai paused. “Define resident.” Juna wrote in the margins: *Here, but not always.* A machine processed their entries, then rejected them both as “unverifiable.” Around them, empty chairs tilted toward the sun. “Maybe we’re counted in a different country’s story,” Juna said. They nodded to the invisible registrar and walked out with nothing recorded.
