25.9. Broadcast from the Evacuation Clock
Location: Odaka High Ground Alert Tower
Description:
Atop a hill outside Odaka stands a metal tower with a siren and a now-disconnected broadcast unit. Once, it blared evacuation orders. Now, once a week at precisely 12:03 p.m., it turns on—unpowered—and plays a recorded voice reading poetry. The lines change every week. No one has admitted maintaining it. Judai climbs the tower and finds the speaker sealed shut. Juna times her watch to the second. The voice is hers—but she never recorded it. The lines are always the same in theme: flight, return, breath. “It’s not a warning anymore,” she says. “It’s a recital.” The tower has become a shrine to unpanicked departures.

Very Short Story:
The speaker crackled at 12:03. Juna stood beneath it and listened to herself recite something she’d never written. “I leave and leave again, but the hill waits,” said the voice. Judai adjusted the antenna. Nothing was transmitting. “Is it memory?” he asked. “Or a broadcast from the future?” The tower didn’t answer. The wind stopped for the duration of the reading. Then resumed like nothing had happened. They marked the moment in Judai’s notebook, then climbed down. “Next week,” Juna said. “Let’s leave before it speaks.”
