25.2. The Studio Above the Temporary City
Location: Odaka Recording Hill, Near the Temporary Housing Grid
Description:
Set on a hill once used for geological surveying, a small recording studio was assembled in secret by children displaced by the disaster. It had no walls—just a roof, a cassette deck, and headphones left behind by aid workers. Every day, at 4:26 PM, they recorded silence. Then, after the silence, a single phrase in different voices: “We’re not gone.” When Juna arrives, she finds the tape deck partially buried, but still functional. Judai listens. The voice is Juna’s—aged, uncertain, saying those same words. But the recording predates their arrival. The studio records not time but return. What was temporary became permanent in its disappearance. And so the broadcast continues, never transmitted, always waiting.

Very Short Story:
Judai pressed play. A pop of wind, then silence. Then: “We’re not gone.” The voice was Juna’s. She looked at him, eyes wide. “I’ve never said that.” “You will,” he replied. She rewound the tape. Same voice, same words. No date, no metadata. Just a timestamp: 4:26. They sat beneath the skeletal frame of the studio, wind tugging at their coats. Juna spoke the phrase aloud, this time on purpose. The tape hissed, then clicked. “Now it’s yours,” said Judai. The studio above the temporary city was waiting for a listener that had finally arrived.
