23.7. Platform Signal from the Empty Station
Location: Urakami Central Station Ruins
Description:
The station no longer serves trains, only echoes. Its tracks have buckled into foliage, but the platform lights still blink red, yellow, green, endlessly. A signal post stands crooked, tied to a cable that no longer connects. Judai places a mirror on the platform floor, angled to catch the signal. Juna sets down her book and reads backwards. In the reflection, the lights seem to spell out a message. “Arrival never occurred,” she mutters. There is no destination on the schedule board, only the word “Repeat.” The waiting benches are still warm. An old timetable crumbles under Judai’s foot, revealing the phrase: “Only those who stayed saw it happen.”
Keywords:
Urakami ruins, looped signal, unread schedule, reversed reading, no-arrival message
Very Short Story:
The signal pulsed in time with their thoughts. Juna wrote a phrase in her notebook, then erased it before she could read it aloud. Judai stood in the yellow light, which flickered twice, then steadied. They waited, not for a train, but for a moment. When nothing arrived, they nodded. “It’s working,” Juna said. “What is?” he asked. “The refusal to end.” Somewhere, a door opened into silence.
