23.18. Unheard Broadcast from Mt. Inasa
Location: Mt. Inasa Relay Tower, Nagasaki
Description:
The tower above Nagasaki has not broadcast in years, but today it hums. Judai records nothing but static. Juna, however, hears a transmission—not words, but tones that spell out fragments of their itinerary in minor harmonics. The sound seems to originate from below, not above. Technicians report no active circuits. The tower’s base is surrounded by rusted transmitters pointing into the ground. A printed sign warns: “Silence Is Compromised.” Juna scribbles a reply on hotel stationery and leaves it beneath the tower. That night, her pocket radio plays it back in Morse. It says only, “STAY BETWEEN STOPS.” They don’t know which ones.
Keywords:
Inasa tones, sub-terrestrial signal, harmonic itinerary, compromised silence, Morse reply
Very Short Story:
They stood at the tower as the light dimmed. “It’s humming my name,” Juna said, though Judai heard only static. She bent and placed the note under the relay box. “How can a message play backward before we send it?” Judai asked. She didn’t answer. On the way down, the wind carried a chime they’d never heard before. That night, her radio answered with their names in code—out of order, and softly.
