23.13. Disappearing Bench at Nyokodo

Location: Nyokodo Hermitage, Nagasaki

Description:
Inside the garden near the Nyokodo Hermitage sits a wooden bench that cannot be photographed. Photos show only the moss below it, never the seat or its supports. Judai tests multiple cameras, analog and digital. None succeed. Juna finally sketches it by hand, but her pencil snaps at the final contour. A guide says the bench was placed by a visitor who never left their name. It’s said to disappear for hours at a time. When it returns, it always holds something: a leaf, a note, a scrap of printed prayer. Today, it holds nothing. Juna sits. Judai turns away—and in that moment, hears her ask a question that never gets recorded.

Keywords:
vanishing bench, Nyokodo anomaly, unphotographable object, sketch fracture, unsaid questions

Very Short Story:
The bench returned at 3:06 p.m. Juna was already seated. “It moved,” she said. Judai nodded, though he hadn’t seen it. She held out her palm—empty. “It gave me something,” she whispered, “but not a thing.” He looked away, and when he looked back, she was still there, but the bench was not. She floated for a second, or so it seemed. Then it reappeared with a folded prayer from 1951.
