22.5. Practice Field for Capitulation
Location: Grass Expanse Behind the Museum of Last Wars
Description:
On the outskirts of the Museum of Last Wars, a field has been marked in chalk and colored flags. This is where the Last Arrangement Force practices capitulation choreography—kneeling, offering, saluting, retreating. Juna times their movements. Judai counts beats. The soldiers—actors, perhaps—wear painted-on medals. A loudspeaker plays instructions in fractured Japanese and Russian: “Yield now… Pause… Sorrow stance.” Children from the museum watch in silence. One claps. The others do not. It is not clear if the performers know they are being observed. Each surrender ends with a collapse into the grass, where they remain until dusk. Then the flags are removed. The chalk dissolves in evening fog. And the day’s surrender begins again.
Keywords:
choreographed yielding, chalk formations, sorrow stance, false medals, dusk dissolution
Very Short Story:
They arrived as the last kneel began. Juna filmed the slow descent. Judai sketched the flag positions. The speaker glitched: “…regretful… posture… again.” A girl from the crowd whispered, “They do this every day, but they don’t know why.” One actor fell too slowly—his collapse rewound. Another wept but kept smiling. “That’s not surrender,” Juna said. “That’s surrender performed.” They walked the perimeter at sunset. The fog rolled in precisely. By then, the flags had folded themselves.
