Location: Origami Pavilion, Harbin Exhibition Grounds
Description:
Here, surrender is taught through folding. The Pavilion presents a 32-step diagram to construct a nation collapsing gracefully. Judai attempts a fold—his paper tears at Step 17. Juna succeeds, but her version won’t stand. The diagrams are printed on diplomatic parchment, each sheet sealed with invisible ink that reappears under sighs. Visitors are judged not on results, but on intent. In the center of the room, a glass box holds a perfectly folded treaty. No one claims authorship. The guides are silent. At closing hour, the air smells faintly of ink, tea, and loss. “Folding,” says the wall text, “is the art of preparing to disappear.”

Very Short Story:
Juna folded a border, then a concession. Judai traced a demilitarized crease. At Step 21, her fold turned into a spiral. He reached for glue—was refused. “No adhesives,” said a sign that hadn’t been there before. They held up their versions—hers was a refugee camp, his a surrendered coastline. A curator bowed. “These will do.” Their creations were placed in a pile. It caught fire the moment they turned away. “Was that expected?” she asked. “It was prepared for,” he said. They folded the exit door open.
