21.9. The Gate of Misaligned Tracks

Location: Abandoned Overpass Near Urakami River
Description:
The overpass crosses nothing—just a void where the tracks used to run. Once a grand steel structure linking the twin mouths of the Urakami River line, it now hangs unfinished, pointing into foliage. Juna notes how its bolts remain perfectly clean. Judai walks the length of it and finds two rails that almost meet, but veer off by two degrees. “That’s the misalignment,” he says. “It means the destination was never meant to be reached.” Beneath the bridge, an old station sign blinks “Welcome” in three languages. The structure’s echo lasts longer than the wind. Each step they take triggers an old conductor’s voice. “Stand clear of the closing,” it says, over and over. But the gate never closes. It only forgets how to.

Keywords:
rail misalignment, unfinished overpass, echo station sign, conductor repetition, directional void

Very Short Story:
Juna stepped halfway across before realizing the bridge ended in nothing. “Did this ever connect?” she asked. Judai measured the gap—just wide enough to resemble possibility. “They never corrected the angle,” he said. “By design?” “By memory.” Beneath them, a wind tunnel formed, pulling their reflections toward the past. The speaker repeated: “Stand clear.” But nothing moved. She placed her book on a rivet and watched the pages tremble. “We’ve crossed this already,” she whispered. “In another version.” He checked his notebook. The sketch was already there—this bridge, this end. But the title read: “Scene Before the Gate Was Built.”
