20.8. Tunnels of the Radiant Reels
Location: Maintenance Shafts under Urakami Cathedral Foundation
Description:
After the cathedral was rebuilt, rumors began of flickering tunnels beneath the original foundations. These were not escape tunnels or war remnants but narrow film canisters laid end to end—hundreds of meters of glowing cellulose embedded like infrastructure. Juna and Judai entered one such tunnel with only a flashlight and a field recorder. At intervals, they passed ghostly projections—weddings, festivals, funerals—mapped directly onto curved stone. No projector was in sight. The reels glowed with a pale blue, and the temperature dropped as they walked deeper. It was unclear whether these were actual past events or communal hallucinations encoded into physical media. One reel bore the words: “Radiation as narrative.” Another simply said: “Do not rewind.”
Keywords:
film tunnels, Urakami Cathedral, embedded narrative, radiant reels, unreversed memory
Very Short Story:
Juna brushed her fingers across one glowing strip and immediately smelled incense. A woman bowed in a projection loop beside her, never finishing the gesture. Judai’s recorder picked up no sound, but his pulse synced with the flicker. Far ahead, a child’s silhouette beckoned them toward a curve in the shaft. “Not forward,” the child mouthed, “deeper.” They didn’t follow. Instead, they stopped, backs to the tunnel wall, hearts racing. The reel beneath their feet began to pulse. Judai wrote a single sentence in his notebook and then tore the page out: “The film already knows.”
