20.1. The Labyrinth of Playback

Location: Underground Corridor, Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum

Description:
Beneath the public exhibits lies a sealed corridor only accessible during power failures. This hallway, called the Labyrinth of Playback, contains no signage—just dozens of small, recessed projectors facing walls scarred with memory. Each projection lasts exactly thirteen seconds. Some show fragments of postwar streets, others dissolve into static. One wall displays the same family over and over, entering and exiting their house just before impact. Judai finds that if you walk too quickly, the corridor loops. Juna discovers that if she reads aloud from her book, the images shift to include her shadow. No cables connect the machines. It is unclear who powers them, or what memory loop sustains their glow. One wall flickers with a silent countdown—no zero, no detonation—just the pause before.

Keywords:
underground exhibit, memory projection, Nagasaki loop, unsourced power, visual countdown

Very Short Story:
Judai entered first, notebook in hand, and stepped into a loop without knowing. He passed the same cracked pillar three times before Juna reached in and stopped him. “Read this,” she said, holding her book open to a blank page. As he read, the projectors flickered: now he saw himself, years younger, filming a woman in Nagasaki who looked like Juna. But he had never been there, not then. A projector near the end began spooling without film. It projected light only. Judai stepped into it, and for one second, he forgot the war ever happened. Then it returned. They exited without a word, except one whispered between them: “Again?”
