20.16. The Auditorium With No Audience
Location: Ruins of the Manchu Edison Grand Preview Hall, Shinkyo
Description:
The hall still stands, but barely. The roof has collapsed in places, leaving beams suspended in cautionary angles. The rows of velvet seats are mold-stained, rotting, yet each one holds the exact impression of a viewer long gone. Judai and Juna step carefully between them, careful not to disturb the geometry of absence. A cracked screen—once 70mm, ultrawide—sits behind torn curtains. A faint ticking comes from the projection booth, though no mechanism runs. The film that was once previewed here never premiered, never circulated. Only the room remembers it. On the stage floor is written, in crayon: “We saw it anyway.” Juna sits. The projector does not start, but something in the room does: the sensation of having just missed everything.
Keywords:
abandoned preview hall, phantom screening, audience residue, memory geometry, unseen film
Very Short Story:
They found two seats that hadn’t collapsed and sat quietly. Judai wiped dust from his lap, as if preparing for a formal show. Juna clutched her book and stared ahead into the blank screen. “It’s playing,” she whispered. Judai didn’t hear anything, but he nodded. Behind them, air shifted—as if hundreds of invisible heads had just turned in unison. A cough, too loud, broke the silence—neither of them had made it. Juna opened her book, but the pages were all black. The projector booth flickered briefly, a single frame of light. They rose together. As they left, the crayon writing on the stage had changed: “Still watching.”
