19.2. Ground Zero Echoes
Description:
Later, in the stillness of Peace Park, the pair steps into the most time-charged space in Nagasaki—Ground Zero. Here, time isn’t reversed—it’s suspended. The city rebuilt upward, forward, yet left this epicenter untouched, like a deliberate scar. Judai notes that the atomic clock nearby is set wrong on purpose. Juna kneels to touch the stone marker, noticing a subtle vibration: as if history isn’t past, but constantly being re-emitted. Around them, school groups pass in slow silence, their shoes clicking like film reels threading through memory. Cameras malfunction or take the same image again and again. The pair finds a shadow burned into a wall behind a museum—when Juna blinks, it moves. The air is thick with radiation and reverence, loss and latency.

Very Short Story:
They do not speak while walking through Ground Zero. Juna tries to take a photograph, but the shutter won’t open—it only releases when she turns away. Judai writes, “Some places record without tape.” He reads an inscription that vanishes mid-sentence. Later, they sit on a bench where a tree used to be, and above them a drone hovers, silent, casting no shadow. “Maybe this is where time was archived,” Juna whispers, “but we lost the index.”
