19.20. The Room Where Forms Dream of People

Location: Abandoned Civil Intake Hall, South Nagasaki
Description:
Civil Intake Room 5 was built to receive forms. Housing applications, travel requests, injury reports. Now the forms remain, unsubmitted—half-filled and dream-stained. Judai finds one that says “Permission to Re-enter Thursday.” Juna holds one labeled “Application for Future Sibling.” None are signed, yet all carry fingerprints. The filing cabinets hum faintly, as if dreaming themselves. One drawer opens to reveal a child’s crayon map of Nagasaki, with roads marked “not yet.” These forms are not evidence of people—they *imagine* them. The room has no clock, but the shadows suggest time passes differently here. Each drawer is a proposal for someone not yet born.

Keywords:
paperwork hallucination, form-generated identity, phantom filing, imagined applicant, temporal bureaucracy

Very Short Story:
Juna reads aloud: “Grant request to duplicate self for seasonal use.” Judai finds a birth certificate with no name, but his father’s handwriting. They exchange forms, trying to complete each other’s entries. Nothing fits. In one cabinet, a form spills ink as Juna touches it—spelling her childhood nickname. “These aren’t records,” she whispers. “They’re drafts.” Judai opens a drawer labeled “Unclaimed.” Inside, a mirror and a pencil. He draws his face and leaves it. The room feels satisfied. They exit, but the air clings to them like static paper. Later that night, Judai dreams of being filled out, line by line.
