18.2. The Letter That Delivered a Building
Location: Mailbox No. 34, Former Obihiro Post District
Description:
In Obihiro, certain mailboxes do not accept mail—they issue it. Box No. 34 is known for dispensing sealed envelopes addressed to buildings that no longer exist. On February 2nd, a man received an entire town hall—folded intricately into a crimson envelope. When opened, the structure partially reassembled itself on a nearby field, broadcasting the mayor’s unfinished speech from 1985. Juna compared this phenomenon to a form of architectural origami based on civic regret. The buildings arrive as memory requests, not blueprints. Judai sent a reply: “Do you want to come back?” The next day, only grass remained.

Very Short Story:
They arrived just after sunrise. The field behind the old post station was vibrating slightly, as if rehearsing occupation. Juna opened the envelope carefully. Inside, beams, doors, signage—and a dusty microphone—folded upward. The town hall shimmered into partial form. “It’s not the whole building,” Judai said. “Just the part that was never heard.” A voice crackled through the static: “…as your mayor, I promise…” Then silence. A breeze caught the envelope, now empty. The hall collapsed back into itself. Judai tucked the remains into his notebook. “They’re not sending structures,” Juna whispered. “They’re sending memory frames.”
