17.25. The Emperor’s Rehearsal Orchestra
Location: Basement Rehearsal Chamber, Nara Civic Conservatory
Description:
Beneath the Civic Conservatory is a subterranean space where musicians have practiced the imperial anthem continuously since 1927—never performing, never stopping. The composition has changed through oral additions, interpretive mutations, and forgotten interludes. The conductor wears a mask shaped like an emperor’s silhouette. No one speaks. Juna counts 26 violinists, all blindfolded. Judai watches a percussionist strike a drum labeled “IF.” This is rehearsal as sovereign performance. The music never leaves the chamber, yet somehow permeates Nara’s ceremonies. The orchestra prepares not for triumph, but for readiness. They rehearse the possibility of ruling, should sovereignty be summoned again.
Keywords:
imperial anthem rehearsal, sovereign music chamber, masked conductor ritual, unperformed orchestral loop, potentiality in sound
Very Short Story:
The music was off by a half-second—on purpose. “They correct it each hour,” a technician said. “So it never settles.” Juna watched the conductor twitch his wrist in time with a metronome no one could hear. Judai recorded three seconds of the anthem. When he played it back, it was gone—replaced by silence. “They’re tuning memory,” she murmured. One cellist wept silently, her bow never touching the strings. “This isn’t practice,” Juna concluded. “It’s containment.” They left with nothing but the rhythm in their feet. Outside, the wind carried no melody. And yet, they hummed.
