15.16. The Red Envelope Delivered to No One

Location: Post Box 73, Abandoned Courtyard, Kamigyo Ward
Description:
The courtyard is locked from all sides. A red post box stands untouched in the center, rusted but intact, labeled 73. Local records say the box has been “temporarily closed” since 1952. Yet Judai found a new envelope inside—postmarked with tomorrow’s date, addressed to no one. Juna examined its contents: a list of train schedules, half in Japanese, half in Manchu, with the final line simply reading, “Return to the crossing.” The envelope is always red, always newly sealed, no matter how often it’s removed. The post box isn’t a receptacle—it’s a terminus, a dead letter office for future moments. Someone—or something—is still sending messages here, but only when watched by those who remember how to wait.

Keywords:
##dead letter box
##temporal postal exchange
##Kamigyo Ward signals
##crossing point schedule
##postmarked in advance

Very Short Story:
They opened the box at dusk. Inside: the red envelope again, despite having removed it that morning. Juna unfolded the schedule—it now included their names. “Platform 6, Return Sequence,” Judai read aloud. The wind rose. A bicycle bell echoed twice—no bike in sight. They resealed the envelope and left it behind. But at every turn that followed, the sound of a letter sliding into metal returned. The message wasn’t for them. It was from them.
