15.14. The Painted Station for Ghost Lines
Location: Mural Room, Kyoto Art Center
Description:
Inside Kyoto Art Center is a former classroom repurposed as a “Ghost Line Simulation Environment.” The walls depict a panoramic train station rendered entirely in mural. The schedule board reads: “Lines for Departed Trains Only.” Each painted passenger is blurry, as if pulled from memory. When Juna touched the mural, a light rail bell echoed from nowhere. Judai traced the outline of an illustrated carriage and found his fingers grew cold—like touching history itself. A plaque reads: *This mural was painted from dreams of war widows and unconfirmed sightings.* You can’t board these trains. You can only observe your desire to. And that is the point.

Very Short Story:
Judai pressed his palm to a window in the mural. Juna heard something shift—like curtains in another room. “It’s watching us,” she said. The mural’s lights dimmed. Painted passengers turned their heads. A painted conductor lifted his hand. A breeze passed through the room. Dust danced. Then, one word from the mural’s speaker: “Return.” The bell rang once more. And just as quickly, the room was still.
