10.12. The Seat Assigned to the Emperor’s Double
(Location: Fourth Row, Museum Theater B)
Description:
One chair had a different texture. Slightly thicker cushion, a bent frame where the emblem of the Manchu Edison Corporation had been engraved, then scratched out. The fourth row, center-left. Visitors reported feeling watched when seated there. Juna sat first and saw a black-and-white film of Emperor Taisho walking backward through a cloud of frogs. Judai sat next and saw no image, but heard breathing. The theater ran no projector. The seat had been rigged to trigger memories—not yours, but the Emperor’s double: a stand-in used for media appearances during his final illness. “This chair remembers the person who wasn’t him,” said Juna. They returned the seat to its position. The film started again—without them.

Very Short Story:
Judai closed his eyes while seated. He still saw flickering. A man in ceremonial robes turned slowly toward him, face blurred by static. Juna touched the fabric and felt a pulse. “Not electronic,” she whispered. “Something older.” The seat trembled gently, as if trying to rise on its own. A voice whispered the Emperor’s name—then paused—then whispered a different name. Neither of them spoke it aloud. They left, but the seat kept warm.
