Location: Harbin, Near the River’s Frozen Edge
Description:
The Neutral Pavilion is built on a faultline—between nations, truths, and the logic of endings. Here, surrender never finalizes. Instead, each party agrees to agree again later. The table is split down the middle, its wood warped from too many reversed signatures. Flags hang with no emblems. Juna runs a gloved hand across the table’s seam and feels cold ink soaking upward. Judai photographs the sign above the door: “Abandon Outcome, Retain Performance.” Inside, chairs are positioned to face away from one another. A phonograph plays fragments of national anthems, none recognizable. Outside, ice cracks. The river swells with unfinished decisions. This is where war’s afterimage loops—where peace is performed, not enacted.
Keywords:

Very Short Story:
They took their seats. No one else came. Still, a bell rang. A typed document emerged from the wall. “Draft 114,” Juna read. Judai picked up the pen; it bled black immediately. “It’s not a signature,” he said, “it’s an opening.” The pavilion filled with music—snatches of memory, not melody. She signed too, right-to-left. Their names disappeared as they wrote them. The phonograph skipped. “Now it begins again,” she said. “No,” he replied, “Now it doesn’t end.” The table trembled. Ice cracked just outside.
