21.26. The Arch Films Itself

Location: Beneath the Remaining Arch of Urakami
Description:
At twilight, a camera appears beneath the broken arch—tripod-anchored but with no operator. It begins recording. The footage later discovered is always identical: the arch crumbling in reverse, rebuilding frame by frame, until it stands whole. Then it flickers once and vanishes. Judai places his notebook in frame. Juna stands behind him, book open but unread. The camera turns slightly, as if noticing. “It knows we’re watching,” she says. “No,” Judai replies. “It remembers we were here.” They leave the notebook behind. The next day, it’s returned—containing only film stills. All from the angle of their eyes. “The arch films itself,” she writes. “But only when we don’t.”

Keywords:
self-recording site, reversed collapse, tripod memory, observer imprint, notebook film

Very Short Story:
They stood in silence as the camera whirred. Juna turned slowly, letting her shadow fall across the lens. “It’s catching the past,” she murmured. Judai placed his hand on the stone—rough, still warm. The arch pulsed faintly. They stepped aside. The camera adjusted itself and clicked one final time. When they returned later, the footage showed them absent. But the notebook had filled itself. Twenty-six frames. One for each station. One for each time they didn’t look.
