17.2. The Bureau of Ceremonial Overlap

Location: Yamato Court Sub-Archive B, Nara Prefecture

Description:
In a sub-basement archive behind Yamato’s old prefectural offices, a flickering slide projector plays bureaucratic diagrams from the 1930s labeled: *“OVERLAPPING FUNCTIONS—SOVEREIGN DOUBLES.”* These were contingency procedures should the emperor be required to exist in two locations at once. The files show civic bodies designed to receive instructions from both versions without contradiction. A third emperor—entirely invented—was meant to resolve errors. Judai uncovers a drawer marked “Triad Phase Initiated.” Juna finds an inkwell sealed with chrysanthemum wax. The overlap was never deactivated. Local ceremonies still greet two arrivals. Trains scheduled for imperial use have double manifests. The documents whisper. “It’s not a conspiracy,” Juna says. “It’s a ceremonial habit too sacred to forget how to stop.”

Keywords:
sovereign duplication files, triadic court protocol, Yamato sub-archive, dual arrival rites, ceremonial paradox

Very Short Story:
Judai saw his own name in the logbook—twice. One entry from 1941. One from next week. The clerk, eyes clouded, stamped both with silent precision. Juna unsealed the wax and spilled it onto the table. It rearranged itself into a map. “Three versions of him. Two of her,” she muttered. A corridor opened behind a bookcase. Inside: rows of chairs facing mirrors. On each seat: a robe, a mask, and a signature. Judai reached for one. “This isn’t mine,” he said. But it fit perfectly.
