16.20. The Annex of Deferred Archives

Location: Basement Level 2, Former Shōwa Memorial Museum

Description:
In a sub-basement once beneath the Shōwa Memorial Museum, now demolished, there existed the Annex of Deferred Archives. Judai and Juna find its layout sketched in pencil on a surviving restroom wall nearby. The Annex contained materials never officially recorded—pre-vote surveys, trial budgets, family trees with intentional redactions. Its central artifact: the “Timing Desk,” an oaken table where documents were reviewed but never signed. When Juna places her hand over the imagined desk, her palm tingles. A psychic archivist reportedly collapsed here in 1974 while decoding population simulacra. The Annex was sealed, forgotten, and then supposedly rebuilt virtually. “To defer,” reads a note scrawled beneath the blueprint, “is to rehearse erasure.”

Keywords:
Shōwa museum sub-archive, deferred civic documents, unsigned memory desk, basement blueprint sketch, archival rehearsal chamber

Very Short Story:
They paced out the floorplan in silence. Juna stopped at the approximate location of the desk. “This is where decisions paused,” she said. Judai lit a candle and placed it where a folder might have lain. Nothing appeared—yet the flame leaned sharply west. “Erasure has a direction,” he muttered. They knelt and whispered titles of reports they never saw. Somewhere below, a pipe gurgled like a drawer opening. “They deferred it,” she said, “but not forever.” They left a single page on the floor—blank, but signed. Outside, the museum was rubble. But inside, the archive had already begun again.
