But the prototypes, housed beneath Kyoto Institute of Radiographic Memory, began to affect field recordings. Recordings made near torii suddenly reversed audio. Photographs warped, with people walking backward through gates. Juna and Judai visited the lab, where a technician admitted: “It started showing scenes from before the gates were built.” On one reel, they saw an empty field transform into a shrine, then into ash, then into film grain. The machine doesn’t rewind objects. It rewinds intentions. Torii aren’t gateways anymore. They’re switches. \\
