3-1 : A New DVD is Placed In The Machine
Where travel is easy in a tiny time machine like a watch—just look and see—as Shadow-Eugene ties his shoelaces and departs to Manchuria through quarters collapsing across time and space
A new DVD is placed in the machine. “OK! OK! GO! So we went.” Travel is easy in a tiny time machine—it's like a watch, just look and see. One moment it is Day 01 in the French Quarter, next moment Day 01 in the Boston Quarter, next moment Day 01 in the Tokyo Quarter. Meanwhile you can still-travel to other places at once or twice at once—New Alamogordo, Budapest, a concentration camp in Upper Air Austria, or to Manchuria. Shadow-Eugene shadow-squints and concentrates on following in the proper solar-direction. He doesn't want to get detached. He wants to see for himself. “Árnyék-Eugene! Kösd be a cipődet! Menjünk! Shadow-Eugene! Tie your shoelaces! Let's go! Mandzsúriába! To Manchuria!” This movie is the dream of a time machine and you are in it. Judai and Juna arrive as archivists of something invisible.
3-2: A NEW DVD IS PLACED IN THE MACHINE 2
The Tray Opens Again—This Time, Different
A second DVD enters the five-dimensional machine, carrying the next sequence of lost films from the Manchu Edison Film Corporation—the narrator's hand pressing the disk into the slot while somewhere in Nagasaki, Judai's voice prepares to narrate entries 27 through 52, the machine's electromagnetic field aligning with Earth's poles as the transmission resumes, another 26 films for another day in the endless cycle of telling stories to those who watch from above.
3-3: A NEW DVD IS PLACED IN THE MACHINE 3
The Third Disk, Or When Repetition Becomes Ritual
The narrator's hand returns to the machine a third time, sliding another disk into the tray as the mechanism accepts it with the familiarity of liturgy—this DVD contains entries 53 through 78 of UNITEDST's dissolution, films where the ruins have begun documenting themselves without human intervention, where Judai and Juna's voices merge with the static between transmissions, and the UFOs above have started responding in patterns the machine wasn't designed to interpret, each insertion now less an act of storytelling and more a compulsion to continue speaking into the void regardless of who or what is listening.
3-4: A NEW DVD IS PLACED IN THE MACHINE 4
The Fourth Insertion—The Machine Anticipates the Hand
Before the narrator's fingers reach the tray, the machine opens itself, ready for the fourth disk containing entries 79 through 104—the midpoint of the first cycle where UNITEDST has fractured into Unit DST and the borders between film, transmission, and reality have dissolved completely. Judai speaks from inside the DVD now rather than outside it, Juna's voice echoes from three years ago and tomorrow simultaneously, and the UFOs have begun broadcasting back, their responses arriving as deleted scenes from movies the Manchu Edison Film Corporation never made, frames the machine plays in reverse while the narrator watches, unable to stop inserting disks.
3-5: A NEW DVD IS PLACED IN THE MACHINE 5
The Fifth Disk—Where the Narrator Becomes the Narrated
The fifth DVD slides into place carrying entries 105 through 130, and the narrator realizes they've been inside one of the films all along—Judai's voice describes someone placing a disk into a machine beneath Paris while Juna's voice describes the same action happening in Nagasaki thirty years earlier, the UFOs watching both versions simultaneously as the electromagnetic field inverts and the machine begins playing memories that haven't been recorded yet. The tray closes. The narrator's hand is still reaching. Somewhere between transmission and reception, the distinction between operator and operation collapses into a single continuous gesture that repeats across all twenty-six days.
3-6: A NEW DVD IS PLACED IN THE MACHINE 6
The Sixth Insertion—The DVD Remembers Being Watched
The sixth disk enters the machine containing entries 131 through 156, but this DVD has already been played in a future the narrator hasn't reached yet—scratches on its surface form a map of UNITEDST's final territories, and when it spins, Judai and Juna's voices overlap with the voices of the UFOs who have learned to narrate back, their transmission describing the machine being constructed in 1993 and dismantled in 2048 simultaneously. The lens reads data that changes while being read. The narrator realizes each disk contains not films but instructions for building the device that plays them, a recursive manual written in the language of collapsed states.
3-7: A NEW DVD IS PLACED IN THE MACHINE 7
The Seventh Disk—Lucky Number, Unlucky Transmission
The seventh DVD contains entries 157 through 182, films shot in territories where luck has become legislative policy and the number seven appears on every street sign, courthouse, and border crossing of what remains of UNITEDST—Judai counts to seven in seven different languages while Juna photographs slot machines that only pay out in sevens, their reels spinning through atomic symbols and census data. The UFOs respond by arranging themselves into seven-pointed formations above seven cities that no longer exist. The machine plays the disk seven times before accepting it was only inserted once. Repetition creates its own probability. The narrator's hand shakes on the seventh insertion, uncertain if this is continuation or recursion.
